THREE WEEKS FROM RACE DAY and our friends are gettin' creative

Hello Everyone! We are three weeks out and the excitement over this year's run is gaining momentum.

A big shout out to all our shadow participants covering 35 states! To date, we already have DOUBLE the amount registered than we did last year at this time...thank you for you enthusiasm, it gives testimony to our union in Jesus, no matter how many miles may separate us! To show our gratitude we wanted to share with you the way some of our friends are gettin' creative...

Meet Bill Duffy, sfo, Columbia City, IN
Mr Duffy, because of knee issues knew he couldn't run the race, so instead of being a shadow runner, he is yep, you guessed it...a 'shadow wheeler'. Instead of running the 10k, he will be biking a 50k(31mi). To quote him, 'The snow is melting and it's time to ride!'

Be safe our fellow Franciscan! Ride hard and watch the ice!!!

Meet our friend(center back row) Richard from MN...Richard is traveling west to AZ with his wife, Kelly to be an on-site 10k participant! He has several grandkids in Phoenix, so it will be a family affair! We look forward to meeting them ALL!

Last but not least, meet Bob and Mimi from Indian Harbour Beach, FL...unfortunately we don't have a photo...but they are both retired military(we salute you both!) who will be doing the desert run like they do it in Florida---a beach walk!!!

Learning the Hard Way

There is much to be learned when you’re training, no?

Here's some of the basics:

*You CAN go that extra lap before you have that water!

*It is NOT about being perfect or looking perfect, it's about persevering at the task at

hand. And being thankful. Period.

*It is just downright healthy mentally and physically to treat yourself every once and

awhile.

*And lastly, I experienced on Sunday one of the most important 'Life Lessons' one can glean while training and that is- to just laugh at yourself!!!

Here I am lying on my back in the desert,
this one is totally staged!

There I was doing my run, feeling pretty cocky as I finished my 2nd mile, basking in the early morning sun just as it was peaking over the White Tanks and WHAMO, I got tripped up over a TINY pebble. Next thing I knew I was laying flat on my back in the middle of the desert, with gravel stuck in my hands and blood gushing from my knee. And all I could do, after I checked my new running pants to make sure I didn't rip them (phew, I didn't) was to lay back down and laugh. It was a great opportunity to just let go of everything I wanted to accomplish and open my eyes to the beauty God has so surrounded me with. So remember, goals are good, pushing yourself has its benefits, but being grateful and loving what your doing is the best training tip of all!!

OK, onto business! Sr John-Mark and I had a fantastic meeting last week at Kiwanis Park in Tempe-the new (and improved) venue! It is fantastic because it is so centrally located, is full of acre after acre of green grass with a lovely pond to boot. We look forward to working with Jerry, from the city of Tempe to make this a blessed and fun event for all. Sorry, we forgot a camera, but next time we go we'll take pics. Promise.

Registrations are starting to come in some of the places are New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania...not to mention locally as well!!!

Thanks to our good friend Ruth Ristow who is designing the T-shirts for the run this year. You made it hard to just choose one Ruth, but choose we did. Sorry everyone, no sneak peaks...you'll just have to wait till race day. But know that you will be the most stylish runners around!!

Hi Everyone! Yes, it's us again! The Running Nuns are preparing for Nun Run 2011 and we are so excited! Saturday, March 12, 2011 is going to be awesome! We just had our first "in-house" meeting, and are so delighted to see how the Lord has already given Nun Run 2011 wings. There are so many great inspirations and ideas flying around in our heads. Please pray for us especially in these beginning stages. We know He has super plans for His event again this coming year. We believe it will be even more glorious than 2010 - if that's possible! :) Anyone blessed to participate with us last March knows what I mean. It was an incredible day - whether you were at our venue in Arizona or a Shadow participant in your own area!

Hoping to get some feedback...

Hi Everyone! We can't believe it's been a month since our 1st Annual Nun Run! We are still on a runners high :) We think it was all that joy of the Lord going around! It was an awesome day!

Also, we just sent out an email with a survey for all our participants. So if you registered, you should have an email in your inbox. Please take a few minutes to answer the questions and give us some ideas on how to improve our race for next year. We appreciate your input.

All is well here... We are enjoying this very strange, but very welcome cool spell. It's only 59 degrees here in Black Canyon City.

Finally, don't be shy. Please continue to post messages on this blog throughout the year. And feel free to email us with your ideas or thoughts about our Nun Run. We are making plans for 2011... Help us make it even better then 2010!

Hello to all! At long last the nearly 1300 photos of the Nun Run are up and available to all. Through Flickr you can download a nice quality photograph of the event. I think our dear friend Jeff Fuentebella got a good picture of just about everyone at the event. Each photo exudes the great JOY and ENTHUSIASM of the day. So be sure to check them out. There are 3 different sets that are uploaded. One are the professional photos by Jeff. Another are the on site photos taken by the Nuns or others who have emailed their photos to us. The last set is a growing group of shadow participants. As the emails continue to come in, we upload them to the shadow page. Many of the shadow teams are represented there - and we are still working on getting the rest up.

A goodie bag stuffing party!

This past Thursday evening we were blessed to be joined by some of our volunteers to get our bags stuffed and go over some details for our race.

My name is Fr. John Caulfield, and I’m a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington. I’m also an enthusiastic supporter of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration and their first Nun Run!! I want to thank the Sisters for giving me a chance to offer a little encouragement to all of you out there who are Nun Run Fundraisers – and to those of you who still might be. What a great chance we have to be co-workers with the Sisters in the building up of God’s kingdom in the midst of the Arizona desert. And by asking people to donate to the cause, we’re offering them that same chance of joining in this amazing work. So don’t be shy, but be boldly confident in the Lord! Go out into the streets and byways, homes and workplaces, emails, texts and blogs, and get the word out – there’s something special happening in the desert! Let people see your enthusiasm, and they’ll be enthusiastic, too, and very willing to support you and the Sisters. Above all, pray and entrust all your efforts to Our Lord. Channel 12 Interview

Hi Everyone! We are finishing an interview with Channel 12 today. They will put it all together in a package and air it sometime in the next week or two before the Race on their Hero Central segment. Hope it's good! :) We had fun, either way. James the camera guy and interviewer was sweet. He was able to get some soundbites, footage of us praying and some of us training out on the mesa. The last part is a Skype interview with Lin Sue this afternoon. And it will be complete. God-willing it will touch some hearts and get people out running with us!

Last time I blogged I said I wanted to write about the Shadow Participants. I didn't forget. I am so excited about these racers. In case you aren't familiar with the term. It just means an "off-site runner/walker". This give EVERYONE the opportunity to participate in our event. Even if you don't live in the area, or even in Arizona you can register and run in your own location. It's (almost) as good as being here. You will get a t-shirt and race #. If you sign up before March 6th we will mail these to you in time to run in on March 20th. If you sign up after March 6th, you will still get a shirt and # - but not till after the 20th of March. Obviously as we get closer to March 20th we can't guarantee that the USPS will cooperate. But, let me say it again - SHADOW PARTICIPANTS can register till MARCH 20th. Ok, my excitement is rising! Our first registration was a woman in London! We now have people running in Italy, Puerto Rico, Australia, and all over the States! Please, help us continue to spread the word to your family and friends. Another registration came in for a shadow runner in Landsdale, PA yesterday. She said she heard about the Run from an email from a friend! Wow, all the way over there... incredible :)

We are on Facebook too!

Wow, these last few weeks have totally picked up with Nun Run preps! And we are getting so excited. But that's not the real reason for my slacking here on the blog. We are now on Facebook. Trying to figure that out...and keeping up with posts there have put me behind here. Ugh! I will have to juggle both somehow. Actually, I heard from the lovely ladies who set that page up on Facebook that I can link it and have people read this and that. Hmmm... I thought I was pretty computer savvy but I'm not totally getting it. I'll admit - I'm a novice on Facebook. But in the short time I've posted and browsed I can see it's a great tool. I hope to use it for His Glory! Be sure to check us out on Facebook. We are: The Poor Clares Nun Run 2010. Do I need to tell you anything else for you to find us?

Okay...so the news. Registrations are pouring in. Don't wait to sign up. We are filling up fast with both on-site runners and shadow runners. We are just thrilled at the enthusiasm and interest this event has generated! The fun news...we have our race shirt designed and have seen the first printing. We think you are going to be wild about them. We like them a ton! :)

Two more quick things... we have a FREE PRIZE. Anyone who raises $100.00 in donations to our cause will receive the coolest 20oz Nun Run logo stainless steel water bottle! :) They are very fun. Everyone who has seen them thinks the $100.00 additional funds to be raised is actually too low for such a great prize. But we want you to have them... So, please be sure and check out our "Additional Fundraising" page for ideas and information on how to win this and other incentive prizes. Our local fundraisers should be interested in "Dinner with the Nuns". Serranos Restaurant has graciously offered to host this wonderful meal. We are all looking forward to it.

Next time I write I want to share some about our Shadow Teams. I'm so excited about them! And I want to encourage EVERYONE to participate - near or far. Just remember if you are a Shadow Runner - you must register by March 6 to have a shirt and # to race in on March 20. Our cut off for mail-outs in time for the race date is MARCH 6!

Alerting all Floridians...

There is a hurricane brewing in Florida! :) My sweet little sister, Karen, is organizing a Nun Run Shadow Run in Central Florida for March 20th. She is inviting everyone in Florida, and surrounding areas, who would like to participate! So join in the fun. Run with others who also want to help us make our dream of building the Lord a Eucharistic Throne here in the desert a reality! She and Eddie, one of our great friends (pictured running a race to the left), are still securing a place and the details. If you are interested in being apart of this shadow run team, please email me with your contact info at nunrun@desertnuns.com. I will pass it onto them and they will contact you with the details when they have been worked out.

Do not forget the largest shadow team gathered outside our venue here in Arizona will be recognized. Our Stanley Nun trophy will have the team name, location and # of people engraved on the base in thanksgiving for your support. And we will award the team members with a special shadow participant ribbon. Our hope is that this will be an incentive for all of you to tell as many of your family and friends, and gather to run/walk in your area. There are also shadow runs being organized in Washington, DC and Ohio. (These are Sr. John-Mark's family and friends. There is a heated competition between Ohio and Florida. We'll see who really has more friends! :)

Today I caught Sr. John-Mark eating a banana sundae! :)) She said she was "training". I think she means...because she is training - she needs the extra energy. Ha! She certainly deserves it for all the hard work she is doing in organizing this, will be, fabulous event! I can't give her a hard time. Sister, you can have 10 more if you want :)

It's getting late here, but I wanted to write a quick post to answer an anonymous readers question from yesterday about how many Sisters will be participating in our run/walk. To date - 1 Sister will be running the 10k, 2 Sisters will be running the 5k, and the other 3 will be walking the 5k. So everyone is participating in one fashion or another! We are all very, very excited! And everyone is in "training"....in one fashion or another!

Please, keep the questions coming. I enjoy answering your questions, hearing your comments, getting your feedback and learning how you are promoting our Run. Only 66 days till Race Day...

Happy New Year 2110! We hope everyone had a blessed Christmas season and New Year with their families and friends. We had an absolutely beautiful Christmas here at Our Lady of Solitude. I'll leave the details of that to my fellow blogging Sisters on one of our other blog spots - which I hope you visit as well :) I just want to jump into our Nun Run news. Every time I see 2010 I realize we are now in our Nun Run YEAR! So the countdown has begun. We have 69 days left to plan and train for our Nun Run! Wow! It's coming fast. A couple of our biggest milestones since I last blogged is that we sent out our first batch of promotional packets to all the parishes of the diocese. So we are asking the priests and staff to promote our race to their parish families. We are praying for a big response. The packets included our newly available and designed poster. Please click here to download and print your own copies. Anywhere you can post or have these passed out will be fantastic. Even if you are not in the area we are promoting our shadow participation option as well. Thank you for your support and help in spreading the word. Next time I write I am going to announce the award for our largest local fundraiser. As some of you might have read in previous blogs - we are trying to use our Run as a medium for people to do additional fundraising. We opted not to have any type of mandatory fundraising, like some races do, but we hoped people who register would use the Fundraising option and tell their families and friends to sponsor their miles or make a donation to their race. So....in keeping with our desire to encourage people to do this we are offering awards for the largest fundraisers. These are To Be Announced... :) So, check back soon! God bless and keep running...

Hi again! Thanks Deb and Cheri for leaving your comments!! We are very excited you are promoting the Nun Run via forums and your Facebook account. We hope others will be inspired by your ways of promoting our race and will do the same. Any way you can get the word out is just great! Thank You for your enthusiasm! As promised, I am posting a picture from our last core meeting. These are a few of the dear ladies who are helping us organize this event. From left to right they are: Sr. John-Mark, me, Susan, Jill and Ann Marie. (Jen is not shown, but thank you too!) These are just incredibly dedicated woman of God, and they are behind much of the work we are doing to make March 20th happen! Please pray for them and for us. We are unbelievably indebted to them! Thank you, Ladies! May Our Lord reward you!

There is so much going on... People are starting to register. YAY!!! We will be posting our first few flags on the Shadow Participant page today or Monday. Make sure and check out where our friends will be running with us across the country. We are equally excited about participation outside of our venue. This will be an awesome witness of being one family in Christ, and the universality of His Church. We hope many, many more of you will sign up and run with us wherever you are. It is written in several places, but again, I wanted to explain that the largest "team" that runs together outside of our Glendale, AZ location will be recognized and awarded. We will have a "Nun Run Cup" - much like the Stanley Cup idea. And the winning team will have their name and location engraved on the Cup. This trophy will be kept in a place of honor from year to year for prayers and in thanksgiving for your teams participation.

There is always more to say :) ...but I am going to end for now. I'll have a couple more fun things to share next time I blog - so make sure and check back soon. Before I sign off today, with the holiday so close, I just want to suggest that you consider registering your family and friends for the Nun Run as a Christmas gift! If you know they like to run/walk and would be interested in being apart of our fundraiser - this would be a great way to surprise them! If they aren't too into running or walking, you could still give a donation to the Run in their honor as a Christmas gift. It's the time of year to give and receive and what better way than to give to the Lord, by letting those you love be apart of helping us build Him a Eucharistic Throne here in the desert.

The Great Forerunner...

I am back after a short break. We hope you all had a beautiful Thanksgiving with your family, friends and loved ones. Ours was wonderful - and we are really overwhelmed with all we have to give THANKS for this past year. And, we are so happy Advent is here... That means Christmas is right around the corner! Yay! Well, we are still planning and preparing for our Nun Run. We hope everyone is training and as excited as we are :) I've been thinking a lot about St. John the Baptist, one of the great figures of our Advent journey. And I think he can be a great patron for our preparations and event as he is lovingly called "The Great Forerunner"... So, he was a runner too, see! We too want to prepare the way for Our Eucharistic Lord... We are Running to build Him a Throne where He will be loved and adored. St. John the Baptist, pray for us! As for an update...this Thursday we will have our second official Nun Run meeting. I hope to have pictures for you next time I blog. That way you can meet some of the people helping us make this race happen. In the meantime, I hope you are spreading the word. We need as many people to hear about our event as possible. We think most of you are waiting to register till after the new year. But we hope you will consider signing up now, and telling as many of your family and friends as possible. A good reason to register early is that you will you have the option to set up your own fund-raising page. This is a terrific way to get everyone involved. I set up my own page and will be sending out an email asking family and friends to sponsor my run. Shadow Participants! The More the Merrier...

Thanks so much for your great question! For those of you who didn't see - we had an anonymous comment left on our first post regarding the Shadow Participant aspect of our Nun Run. Basically our Shadow Participant option allows people who live out of state, or driving distance, of our race in Glendale, Arizona, to run or walk with us anyhow. Just do the 10k/5k in your own area!! All you have to do is register for the race as normal and you will receive our official Nun Run t-shirt and be ready to race with us! Consider spreading the word and inviting others to run with you too. We think it would be so fun to form teams of Shadow Participants. And we want to award the largest team gathered together to run outside our race location. We are going to have a trophy/or award inscribed with your team name and location - kind of like the Stanley Cup, in recognition of your efforts at spreading the word and running with us! So, tell your family and friends!! We are so excited! Praise Him with great praise! :)

Welcome to the Nun Run Message Board! We are so excited to finally see our idea of a race to give Glory to God and to help build His Kingdom be born. Our calendars are marked for March 20, 2010, and we have begun training for this exciting day! We hope as many of you as can will join us for our First Annual Nun Run through the desert. And that those of you who aren't able to be present with us here in AZ, will still join us from afar as a shadow participant. Please leave your comments and questions.
